1..2..3..CHO

“Communists are opportunists” declares Cho, in his Vikatan interview, summarising his view on how the left have reacted to the nuclear deal. He cites the Left’s stand (or absence of it) on Chinese aggression in the North East as the justification for his comment. But surprisingly he spares the BJP of the adjective. In fact to a general question on opposition to the deal, he does not even mention the principal opposition party which is opposing the deal just like the Left. Actually coming from Cho, that is not surprising. For Cho, and others who think like him, BJP’s opposition to the nuclear deal is not opportunistic. That the BJP, had it been the ruling party, would have most likely gone ahead with the deal does not enter into the minds of these Left bashers. For these enlightened people, if Left opposes something on an ideological basis(hypocritical or not), it is opportunism. If the Right does the same, it is because the poor things are forced to do it because of political compulsion. What can the hypocrisy be in that!!!!!

Actually this sort of attitude tells a lot more about the sort of people we are. Take a stand on the basis of a belief or ideology and you will be hated. Take a stand when it suits you and dump it when it doesn’t and you can escape with just a tap on the wrist. You might even be voted to power next time. Ideologies are vulgar and hypocrisy is noble. How much more Victorian can we be?

You expect a BJP (Rajya Sabha) MP to criticise the party ? It surprises me how much Cho is still considered neutral in many quarters - not his fault though; he has never hidden his preferences. This time around they have very few supporters - even hard core 'Frontliners' like Praful Bidwai are not very explicit in their support of the lefties. I haven't studied this issue in detail - so I will just stop here.

Sridhar,
Off-track but not entirely :)

Left-bashing "India-Shining" Supporter. This dorai has attempted sarcastic humor! This post isn't a surprise at all considering the very field he is in :))

The beauty of the whole left-basher argument is that ONLY the left is fair game when it comes to tests of hypocrisy.

We have people who vociferously blog that capital punishment and POTA will eliminate terrorism!! :))
EKSI :(

BNB,
You are right in your surprise....
Cho certainly does not hide his preferences. But I have often felt that he was a fair man with a specific bias. I don't agree often with much of his ideas, but alteast I always thought he was fair and gave credit where it was due and criticised when the actions deserved it.
But turns out that you are right, I have been naive indeed !!!

Bala..what you say is True...Left is no parogon of virtue, but atleast the same rules have to be applied to everyone. EKSI indeed :(

Bala, BNB
I personally believe that a deal which US took 1.5 years to pass, a deal which surely would have ramifications to our foreign policy over the next few decades, surely needs to be discussed as a national debate before it is signed.
To that extent the Left's role is important. It has brought the issue to the forefront. Whether we sign it or not, the common man atleast knows now that there is something called a hyde act and a 123 deal. That is the advantage of a democratic system. I am sure if the Left did not have the 60 seats, most of us would not know such things called 123 existed. Atmost it would have been a Prabhu Deva movie to many of us.

But there remain a few unanswered interesting questions, like why does a PM who has normally not taken seriously many serious issues, even humanitarian disasters like Vidarbha suicides, stake his government on this one. Maybe he really really believes this one is good for the Nation....Or maybe there is more to it than meets the eye.
